3 Resolutions for the Grieving

Written by Director, Gareth Coles:

We say goodbye to more people in winter than we do during any other season of the year, so it’s not all that surprising that the New Year can be bittersweet for a lot of people. It’s important to remember that when we love deeply, we grieve in the same way. So whether you lost someone yesterday, or last century – grief can last a lifetime. The way it affects us depends on many things, but there are three basic resolutions we can make to help ourselves through the process…

  1. Remember and honour the love you shared – my blog last November summarised some beautifully poignant ways to demonstrate remembrance for loved ones: read again here.
  2. Engage in the process of healing – whether that’s seeking bereavement support from the incredible organisations that operate here in Cardiff, meeting up with friends if you have isolated yourself, or going for a walk if you’ve been avoiding getting out of the house. The first step is often the hardest but there is plenty of support out there for you.
  3. Look for ways to bring enjoyment back into your life – this can be as simple as taking the time to read, listen to music, tend to your garden, get a haircut, call a friend, or go out for dinner; whatever activity you used to do that you enjoyed before you experienced the loss. Your loved one would want you to…

Having worked with thousands of bereaved families across Cardiff, we know first-hand that everyone experiences and deals with loss differently. Should you ever need support – help is only a phone call away and our bereavement services page provides a shortlist of local organisations that we know do great work and can provide you with support from qualified professionals.
